Scope base for commercial mauser

Guys,

I just picked up a commercial FN Mauser action. It is drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The front is obviously the same spacing as the Weaver S46. I measure the spacing of that mount as 0.884".

The rear mount holes seem to have the same spacing ... and this is different from the other large ring Mausers I have bought mounts for ... they took the Weaver S45 base.

Anyone know what Weaver base will fit the rear on this one?

(Brownell's catalog gives no spacing information ... so short of calling them, their catalog is not helpful.)

Thanks!

I've not found a commerically available base. I made my own. JC Higgns? Mine is.

Mike,

Don't know what the action originally came from. Is marked "FN Action made in Belgium." The FN is in their stylized logo. Pretty beastie I must say.

Not a Higgins then. It's easy enough to have a base made to fit.

I'll bet it was a Higgins action. I have seen some just like it, including the oddball base spacing. They will have all the usual FN markings sometimes.

Did the search. Post '55 actions have this spacing. Wisner indicated that he did not know of a source for the rear mount. Unfortunately, it was an old post and the year of the post is not reported by the system. Could be older.

Anyone know of a source for such a base?

Talley makes a rear base for the Higgins FN action

Just scroll down to the Mausers.

I have or had some Redfields years ago when I was collecting FN's. When I get time I will check, if I still have them they will be cheap...

It is a JC Higgins action. Mine is marked the same as yours. My smith welded one of the holes up and redrilled.

My JC Higgins model 50 uses Weaver #46 front, and #45 rear it now has aluminum bases but I just ordered Weaver steel bases for it.
BTW I just got it back from Westpac with a new Shilen barrel chambered for 257 Rob Ackley improved. Nice job, and it feeds like a mauser should.

The JC higgins used two different rear hole spacings. First, the standard .500" then they switched to .860". One of mine had the .860" and some one just drilled & tapped another hole. I prefer just making a new base.

I've yet to see a JC Higgins with the stylized FN logo on the top of the front ring. I was always under the impression they were reserved for rifles marketed under the FN brand?

I have some B-Square weaver style blank base stock from Brownell's. It is a simple matter to make a pair of bases with the holes to match your receiver.

Jim,

I have a full sized mill with a DRO. What is the approximate radius of the curvature of the top and the angle of the side cuts that need to be blended into the curvature? With that info I can make the rear bases I need.

It varies by action. Insert a tight fitted bar about .700 (if I remember right) into the bolt raceway and measure from it to the top of the action. Add that to the radius of the bar (.350??) and you have your radius to set your boring head. Angle of the flats on the rear bridge should be around 29-32 degrees, but that will vary by action too. Or as Jim said you can get the blank contoured weaver stock from brownells and just cut to length, drill and counterbore.
