The Mausers are advertised as 98 M48s. Does anyone have an opinion about these. Are these good actions for a project rifle? Is the $295 price any good? Thanks

I've seen one. They are in very nice condition but the price is steep. They are an intermediate length action. If you want an action for a custom rifle you could spend 100 to 150 dollars for a VZ-24 or a 1909 Argentine.

Yugo M48 rifles are good (I should know, I carried one for a year, every day), but Mitchell's price isn't. They can be found for about $150, or less if you only need a nice action. Check the net and gun shows.
With kind regards,

I would second the opinions above, and add an additional thought re: collectibility. I don't think there is any. The ones I have looked at had the appearance of a bead blasted hot blue refinish, and heavily sanded replacement stocks. One had the bottom metal a good 1/4 inch recessed into the bottom of the stock.

Go buy one in excellent / near mint condition, all matching if you look around enough, for $99 from Dunhams or Big Five. It will be cheaper, and won't have had all of the character scrubbed off.

The last bargin I got on M48's was five for a $100 with junk stocks. There are plenty out there for $100 per. In the batch of the aforementioned five, three had matching bolts. For whatbever that is worth. These were Yugos.

Almost all I have seen have very rough furniture on them. Supposed to be good shooters, though. No appreciable collector's value and, as mentioned above, Mitchell's is very-much overpriced. Last two shows I was at a guy had the same rifles for $200...and they weren't selling at that price. Probably could have got one for $175 if I had dickered, but didn't need it.
