I was reading the Hodgdon #26 manual last night & it states "Around 1958, Remington started rifling all .244 caliber barrels with a 1-9 inch twist, but nobody seemed to notice." Does anyone know off hand if this is true?

after the 1 in 12 fiasco remington did change the twist on the 244, but the damage had already been done. I believe they did change it to 1 in 9 just to be different than the 1 in 10 243's

The original .244 twist was 1-12. I had a Model 722 built in about 1957 that definately had the 1-12 twist. When Remington "renamed" the cartridge "6MM Remington Magnum" (briefly, then just "6mm Remington") the twist was definately changed to 1-9 or 9.5. If some .244's were built with faster twists prior to that, I'm unaware of it. But it's certainly possible as I've heard of .244 shooters who had no trouble stabilizing 100 grain spitzers, which mine certainly would not. By the way, my .244 was outstandingly accurate with anything 90 grains and under.
