Ken in VAA simple rebarrel?
I'm looking to have my first rebarrel done. To say that I don't have a clue about who to use would be an understatement.
I'm looking at having a Ruger MkII rebarreled from 30/06 to 35 Whelen. There are no gunsmiths I've been able to find in my area that can do this.
What about the services provided my some of the barrel makers? Been looking at Shilen, Krieger, MRC, etc. Anyone specifically I should look at or stay away from?

butchlambertSeveral good smiths on this forum. They will do as good or better than the barrel manufacturers smiths and probably cheaper and faster.

Any actual professional gunsmith who can competently rebarrel anything should be able to do that. Do the locals really just mean they don't have the right reamer on hand to chamber the new barrel for the Whelen cartridge?
If that is the situation, many gunsmiths will buy the needed reamer if you agree to pay half the cost for it, and let them keep it after they have finished the job.
On the other hand, Jim Kobe has offered to do the work for you, and he is EXCELLENT. So is Westpac (Malm).

LongshotMany Gunsmiths will not do Rugers due to the action being investment cast. You have several gunsmiths in Virginia Richard Franklin and Clay Spencer come to mind.

Rusty MarlinIf you want to drive it up towards Fredricksburg, I can do it.
Need to rent a reamer is all.
