I've bedded rifles, but never pillar bedded any. I'm wanting to pillar bed my M70 Feitherweight Classic and have some questions. Your help is appreciated, as are any pictures you could post. Thanks.

Brent

1. What are the preferred pillars, and where are you buying them?

2. How much larger should the stocks holes be than the pillars?

3. How the heck do you do this on the rear hole. There is very little stock material at the front of this hole at the top portion due to the trigger cut out.

4. What is the best way to determine the length of the pillars?

5. Does it matter if the screw holes are opened up with a drillpress or a handheld drill? I realize that a drill press will drill much straighter, but do you do anything specific to hold the slcok steady, straight, and square?

6. Should I glass bed the action first and then bed the pillars, or should I do this at one time with the pillars screwed to the action?

Check with Ernie the Gunsmith. He has pillars and instructions available on his website, along with some special tools that make the job easier.

They sell or at least they used to sell pillars at Brownells, come with real detailed instructions too.

Here Are a couple in progress:

I do it a bit different than most. I make the pillars about 9/16 and mill the holes 5/8. I then open the holes much larger at the top and secure them permanently with a different type of epoxy. You then bed over the top.

For the rear on a Model 70, you need to mill an angle after setting the pillars to clear the trigger. I will shoot a pic when I complete that step.
