Gentlemen, my son(14) got a winchester model 1912 12-Ga pump from grandpa. He would like to use it for duck hunting as well as upland game, but so far we are stumped as to how to open the top of the tubular magazine to put a plug in it. We have tried everything that looks obvious to do but to no avail. Does anyone have any experience or insight into this shotgun? If you know any tricks please let me know. Thanks, Barry

This is not rocket science, but slightly tricky. The sliding lock at the muzzle end of the magazine must be removed. there's a visible spring that runs parallel with the sliding lock. depress that spring with a small screwdriver. or penknife and the lock will slide out of the cap....then take out the two opposing 6x40 filister head screws..Now....the magazine spring will leap out and fly across the room...put in a plug (commercial variety) or maybe even a dowel to reduce magazine capacity to two rounds, reassemble and you're LEGAL...best of luck to the lad!

GREAT advice from Duane; just be very carful when you remove the end plug, the spring WILL leap out. Also remember which direction the parts went in. If you need help, give me a call. Not plug related, and I'm just asking because my dad has two M-12's. But should you be careful with steel shot in these old guns?

Rick If they are full choke I would not shoot anything larger in shot size than #2 or 3. If they are modified BB or smaller. I have shot a few cases through my modified barrel with no problems. www.duanesguns.com

just between us chickens, I'd reserve that M-12 for upland birds where I can use lead shot and find a cheap 870 for ducks with screwin chokes and steel shot. I've not used some of the other non-lead shot and maybe some of the other stuff is better on the old barrels.....but I'd be reluctant to shoot steel in it at all. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Thanks Duane, it worked like a charm. He's ready to go and season opens tomorrow. Barry
