I spotted an Oberndorf Mauser today at a gun show. 09 style FP with "Germany" stamped on it. small cutout at 12:00 on rear of the front ring. Marked "USA 1906" and "7,6" on the left of the front ring. crappy small spoon bolt handle. Is this for real? sorry NO pics at the show.

Does it have a Mauser banner on the top of the front ring, and does it have the the typical BUG proof marks? It won't necesarity have a Banner to be a real Oberndorf sporter, but that is a good clue. They will almost always have the Oberndorf provinance on the left receiver wall. I'm no expert, but I can say that I have seen a lot of variation in Oberndorf commercial sporters. Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Sounds like it's been redone into a 30-06 based on the notch and perhaps the 7.6 stands for land diameter (.2992). "USA 1906" leads me to believe it was marked a long time ago in Europe as opposed to being done after it was brought here. I'm not familiar with all our early gunsmiths, but they most likely would have used "30-06", assuming I'm right about the chamber. My 1935 Peruvian is an 06, notched recvr + mil barrel, but it was not re-marked as the books say they were.

Sounds very much like an original sporter. See if the markings match the pics in this thread. http://parallaxscurioandrelicf...y-Sporting-Rifle.htm

Kurt Damn. That was about it. This one had stippled front and rear rings as well but a cheap bolt handle. Iron sights, typical wedge from base.
