I like the fit and recoil handling of the factory stock but would love to refinish it to a darker wood. It seems I could just chemically strip it and then refinish without messing up the checkering. Can this be done at home without too much trouble and if so what products would you recomend?

Kevin, I've done this on at least a half dozen rifles and they all have turned out very nice. First thing is to strip the old finish. I use paint/epoxy remover. Use a toothbrush for the checkered areas. Sometimes it will take more than one application. Once I'm down to bare wood I use Scothbrite pads to smooth it out and remove any left over finish. After all the old finish has been removed you're ready to stain and apply the finish of your choice. In some cases the wood may be very dense and won't take a conventional stain very well. When that happens I have used aniline dies with very good results. Good luck.
