Ruger #1 from -06 to 300 WM
I am thinking of rechambering my Ruger #1 (26 inch barrel) in 30-06 to 300 WM. My stalking and sneaking ability is deminishing with age. As I understand the process, the barrel will not require a set back, a mag extractor will be required. Any other problems??

Any other alternatives between 06 and 300W? I want good Elk put down capacity to 300-325 yrds and the 06 is a little thin, lot of open canyon country shots...where I hunt in Idaho. Alternatives, I do not care much for belted cartridge and the ultras are of no interst to me.

Steven,
You said you don't care much for the belted magnums. You do realise that the .300 has one I assume. I share your distaste for the ultra mags. What we need is that .300 with the belt trimmed off.

I think you are on track with what you need to do to make this work.

I hunt the Middle Fork each year and there is some really open land in there also.

That 300 with the belt trimmed off would of course be the 30 Newton which I keep hoping will be brought back. Regards, Bill.

Yeah, rechamber to .30 Gibbs!! Will give .300 mag ballistics with '06 cases and less powder!!

Unless you are wealthy don't rebarrel a Ruger #1. It's much less expensive and less trouble just to buy another one in the caliber that you want.

I don't know yet what #1 you have but if it has a 22" bbl then you have a handier rifle than the 26" models anyway so just keep the 30/06 and load it to it's full potential or sell it.

Anyone have any feedback on new chamberings in the #1 ? I think the .300 WSM will catch on and Ruger may chamber it? I would wait for that.

I predict that the .300 Win Mag will be old news soon with the .300 WSM stealing the new customers.

I would go to the .300 Dakota. It's not as big as the RUM's and a better bet than a WSM unless factory ammo is really important to you. I had a 7Rem mag. rechambered to 7 Dakota & am very pleased w/ the results (160gr NPs @ 3250fps w/ low pressures). DM is right though, if you just want a .300WM, sell the 06 & buy a new one.
