1. New rifle, to be used for elk, Africa, and the occasional bigg'un whitetail, 9.3x62-64 or the 338 winnie. Catch all, on a mauser action period....which would you suggest (cal).

2. Sako AV accuracy falling off with proven handloads, turn back a couple of threads and rechamber or new bbl. Previously moa out to 300yds, not so good now. Reccomend a good smith.

3. Went into a gunshop today and they were selling swede 96's as mauser 98's bubba'd into 22-250's, 7-08's, 7 wizzum and 308's, when I confronted the employees with the discrepencys (hell with spelling) they told me to go to hell and buy somewhere else. Are there ATF regs dealing with misrepresentation? I wouldn't buy one but I hate the thought of some "bargain hunting lets get one for the kid" gun blowing someones eye and skull out with a meltdown. I am not one to curse or envy a man but that crap is just wrong......

4. I have a bottom metal setup for a 96 type mauser action, hinged, oberndorf style, that I am trying to fix a value to. I would rather trade for some sweet Argie metal or reworked action for above project. I have been offered insane $$ for it but it isn't about cash it is more about trade and rebuilding the stable after two daughters with braces.

Any help with the above questions would be geatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Alan (pm,s do not work)

alvanepps(at)cox.net use old metal on subject line or spam will wack it

I think you'd be better off buying a .338 Winnie on a current Model 70 Supergrade platform and be done with it. Nice stock, not much gunsmithing, and .338 Ammo is pretty much in stock everywhere if you don't handload. Or, if you just have to have it on a Mauser Action, look for an older Browning that was built on the FN action. They are really nice as well.

I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of that bottom metal that you have been offered insane amounts of money for.

This action is detestible and should result in a spanking.....

One could go in and buy one of the guns making sure that the paperwork showed that you was sold a '98 mauser and have a witness with you.

Later you can take legal action and include in that action that they label the balance of inventory for what it is.

Too bad one has to resort to this crap but I really don't know how else to deal with it.

Frankly I believe there's little chance of anyone being injured by their actions except financially. The actions will fail (if they do) in a manner that won't be serious to people's faces.

Where do you come up with this crap?

The Swede has no where near the gas handling capacity of the 98. Failures can and do result in the loss of vision, etc.

I've rebarreled several of these to the .260 and 7-08 rounds and have to agree with you here. The failures are usually set back in the action and if there is a failure it's to finally not allow the bolt to open after firing.

I bet you can't document a single injury to anyone from this type of gunsmithing.

Such typical knee jerk reactions from you liberals in street clothes.

Where have you been Carnivore? I've had my boat offshore only twice this year and I'm used to living vicariously through your fishing pics. Don't desert us any more.

thumbI spent quite a lot of time offshore this summer and very little time making things go bang. I'll try to get some photos hosted and put them in the fishing forum here fairly soon. We didn't take a ton of photos but there are a few good ones.
