I have a 25-20 WCF barrel with a tenon of approx .500 long, .803 diameter over the threads, and about 20TPI. It has a P in parentheses and a VP in an oval in front of the 25-20 WCF marking. It does have an extractor cut.
I think it may have been on a mod 43 Winchester. It is part of a lot of misc things that I picked up about 20yrs ago.

Sounds Winchester-ish. Double check the "VP in an oval", it is most likely a PW intertwined inside an "O". Pictures?

Picture is worth a thousand words. Not any Win marking that I have seen. I haven't a clue.

Winchester Violent Proof (VP)
Winchester Outside Fitted Bbl stamp (P in a circle)

This what is described in Campbell's book on Winchester SINGLE SHOT rifles as being Under Bbl markings.

There are others. You can see the list on a thread here. You can scroll down and may have to enlarge the posting to read it clearly.
https://winchestercollector.or.../barrel-proof-marks/

The (VP) marking is very common on the bottom of Winchester lever action rifle bbls in my experience.
On those, the caliber is also stamped on the bottom as in the picture.

The long cut on the bbl pictured looks like it is for the magazine tube clearance on a lever action as it makes it way towards the frame.
If the extractor cut is at 12 oclock, I'd guess a Winchester Model 92 in 25-20.
Threads sound right. I think the Model 92 is .810-20,,,IIRC

Thanks, The barrel has the Winchester address on the LH side with a date of October 14 1884. The extractor groove is at 12 o'clock. It also has a dovetail on bottom about the distance of the middle of the Winchester address roll stamp.

More photos and info. The extractor groove is at 12 instead of 6 o'clock. 2 dovetails on top for sights, one dovetail on bottom and a slot toward the front on bottom.

The photo above with the proof marks are of the bottom of the barrel.

Yes the first pics are the underside of the bbl. Standard Win markings.

The other pics:
The narrow dovetail is for the forend hanger
The wider dovetail is actually a 'rotary dovetail' for the magazine ring. You place the ring in the dovetail at a 90* angle to the bbl and rotate the ring into place.
Many of them have been damaged by unknowing people attempting to drive them out side to side.
Remington used the same style on their M12 22 pumps.

The breech end clearly shows the 12oclock extractor groove cut, the 25-20WCF caliber mark and the Winchester WP in an Oval proof mark.
The dovetail on the top of the bbl in the distance in the pic is for the rear sight. A standard buckhorn.

The bbl is for a Winchester Model 92 rifle.
Uses a 'rifle style' forend w/steel forend cap.
Not the 'carbine style' forend that uses the barrel band attachment style.

Is there a date code just right of the ".25-20" (near the threads) ? If there is it will tell you when it was made.

On the bottom to the right of the 25 20 next to the threads is marked 3 X.
What is the blind hole that is about .250 back from the muzzle on bottom?

Clearance for the magazine plug screw.

Not just clearance for the screw; the screw is meant to protrude into that hole as an additional means of retaining the tube against recoil. Regards, Bill
