Any problem with a 1-in-8" twist in .264 Winchester Magnum? Bullets will probably be 140's

Thanks

I doubt it. Shilen suggests a 1 in 8 for heavier than a 130.

As usual just my $.02

Some of the 6.5 Grendel barrels are 1-8 and their preferred bullet range is in the 120 grain bracket.

You don't need an 8 twist to stabilize the 140's at 264WM velocities, a 9 twist would do it. An 8 wouldn't hurt a thing though.

Just thinking about it right now. My hunting grounds have changed and 90% of my hunting is now done in fields on the edge of wood lines. This new lease land will require a rifle that can reach out and touch things at a distance. The ONLY magnum I own is a .300 H&H. I know this rifle would work, but I just can't see putting a scope with an A/O and turrets on this rifle. The numbers on the .264 Win Mag look good for a long range rifle and the cartridge just seems like a good all around choice.

MidwayUSA just got a shipment of Kreiger S/S barrels in and I ordered one in a 1-in-8" twist. After I did this I got to looking and it would seem most rifles in this chamber are spec'ed at 1-in-9" which got me a little worried.

I'm thinking of doing one on a Ruger S/S M77 MKII action but I might buy a different donor action for the project. This isn't the type of rifle I gravitate to. It'll be stainless and have a plastic stock. It'll have an A/O, high turrets and a big objective. Hell, I might even have it painted in one of those new wonder coatings Big Grin

IMO the old .264 is about as good as it gets for what you're going for........a 7mm STW would also have been nice......but the .264 is a lot easier to shoot.

Terry-

The only caveat that I would give you is that with a 1 in 8 twist, I would watch your hand loads, especially if your near the maximum range of the particular handload. My .264 WSM has a 1 in 8 twist and I cannot get to what would be maximum loads in others rifles due to pressure. The only thing I can attribute that to is the twist.

I have a 1 in 9 twist in my .264 Winchester Mag with a Krieger barrel and I don't seem to have similar issues. 79.5 grains of WC872 from Bartlett's is my load. The .264 Win Mag loves ultra slow powders.

That is the reason I opt for the 1-10 twist. Groups aren`t as good as some at 100 yds but----out further?? No problem and cleaner killing too!

I think a 6.5-284 or 6.5-06 will do everything the 264 Win mag will do with less powder.

The .264 WinMag is about 200 fps faster at the same pressure. The difference is significant. Well, it is to me.

Hey Mark, I checked and I'm not running a fever Wink I just get this way from time to time. I've even been shopping for bowling ball finished stocks. animal I may have to draw the line on that one though.
