In answer to your question. I have used one on a argentine mauser. It is very accurate. I can cover a four shot group from 100 yds with a nickle.

Has anyone had any experence with the pre threaded & chamber barrels made by Shilen for the 98 Mauser that Brownells sells. I have two projects in process a 1909 Argentine 30/06 & Yugo 7/57

My experience is that the Lothar Walther deal would be hard to beat... Fully chambered and threaded, and a top notch barrel, for $158 plus shipping (last time I checked) straight from Woody in GA. The Shilen prefit barrels are awful expensive at Brownells.

Good luck,
Todd

I too have had excellent results with the pre threaded & chambered Lothar Walter barrels. An added bonus is that the exterior is extremely well finished which leaves much less work for you to have to do; not so with Shilen.

I have rebarreled my guns with Chrome Moly Shilen barrels and with Lothar Walther. There is no comparison in how long to copper foul and how hard to clean. The LW is lapped at the factory. I wrote Shilen about that, and he said to buy his stainless barrels, as they are all lapped to get the copper lubricant out.

But if you are comparing pre threaded Chrome Moly barrels from Shilen and LW, there is no comparison. The LW is much better and much cheaper.

Lothar Walther!

Keep in mind you will need some means of measuring (gauges, depth mike) and adjusting headspace, like a lathe to take a few thou off the barrel shoulder & face or the front of the receiver ring, sometimes a finish reamer is needed, depends on the particulars of your actions. And you gotta have the usual barrel vise and action wrench.

I have ran into actions with very tight threads, had to set up the barrel in the lathe and take a threading pass on the barrel threads. We are dealing with production tolerances here, both on the barrels and the actions.

Something to know: Most Mauser threads are 55 degrees. Some folks say just thread the barrel 60 degrees and screw it home, but I like to duplicate Paul Mauser's original design. I have a 55 degree thread gauge and grind the threading tool to suit.
