Wondering what the best way to remove the remaining finish on a gloss finished Rem BDL stock is. I want to go with an oil finish. Is sandpaper and tung oil or tru-oil the way to go, or do you want to start with a chemical stripper?

Start by de glossing the existing finish. Try Dupont #7 automotive rubbing compound, water, and super fine steel wool. I think you will find it looks OK with no gloss. After, if you still hate it have at it.

you could also use a Citrus Strip product to remove all the finish. They are non hazardous and smell good. They will remove all the finish without any abrasion to the wood.

Ditto the Citristrip. Easy to use and it will take the finish off even the Browning and Remington high gloss guns. I've done some BDL but I don't have any pics. Heres a 660 done via citristrip then tru-oil.
Good Luck,

I used some stuff from Klean-Strip last year on an old varnished gunstock that worked great. Check out the post below (the poster in question was trying to do exactly what you're doing).

One other tip about the tru-oil. Don't use it straight from the bottel. Mix it 1 part TO to 3 parts mineral spirits and apply multiple thin coats.
