Fine Tuning Rem. 700 Trigger

I have a Rem. 700 PSS from about 1997.

I backed off the trigger tension to about 2.5 lbs. No adjustment to sear engagement or trigger travel.

Stock parts. No "finish work" or polishing.

This gives me a reasonably nice let off. I've bounced the butt on the floor and slapped the sides of the receiver and the trigger appears secure.

I see articles that warn not to set the stock Rem. 700 trigger under 3 lbs. What am I missing? Should I increase the tension?

I've been posting this inquiry for a couple days without response. An "I got no clue, man!" would be better than nothing.

Thanks,

Most of the time when you go below 3#'s there is no spring tension left to return the trigger. Some will work, most don't.

Thanks!

No, plenty of spring tension. The trigger mechanism works fine, on my rifle and one of my friend's Rem. 700.

My concern is that the sear engagement surfaces aren't sufficiently fine to manage this release.

Duane is right about some will work and some won't when you get under 3 lbs. I have three 700's adjusted at 2.2, 2.5 and 3 lbs.

The main thing to do is what you have done; drop test as well as slamming the bolt down hard a dozen or so times. You should also put the safety "on" then pull the trigger then take the safety "off" making sure it doesn't fire. Also be sure to put some varnish, nail polish, etc. over the adjustment screw to make sure it stays put.

With all this done you should have a nice, safe trigger.

Good Shooting,

Ben H

All systems "go" . . . Forgot about the safety function check. Thanks.

I generally get them to where I want them, and, with the action out of the stock, give the tang a sharp whack with the same, somewhat soft wooden stick I use for sprues when casting bullets. The whack is directed down on the tang. The amount of safe pull using this method ranges from 2.5 to about 4 pounds, depending on the gun. I The stick is about the size of a broom handle (in fact, it is a 15" chunk of same). I find this method will snap triggers which I can't get to snap when in the action. The reason for doing this is if the rifle gets dropped, the shock will be more than I am likely to subject it to during a test while assembled, for fear of damage. The bare action tang whack, I think, provides that extra margin.
