The next project will be an Elk,deer, black bear rifle on an 03A3 action. What other 30 cal cases will fit that action?

30-06 Improved, 8mm-06, 8mm-06 Improved, 338-06, 338-06 Improved, 35 Whelen, 35 Whelen improved, 9.3-06, 9.3-06 Improved, 9.3 x 62, 9.3 x 62 Improved, 375 Whelen, 375 Whelen Improved, 400 Whelen. Or if you want to stick with the 30 cal and modify the action, 308 Norma mag (great cartridge), 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, 300 SAUM, 30-338 mag (almost identical to the 308 Norma mag). That's off the top of my head, I'm sure other people will chime in with their ideas as well. Hope this helps - Dan

I would vote for the .308 Norma Magnum. Either that or the 7.62X39. I really prefer the Norma.

I may be missing something here, but I would not consider a 7.62X39 as Elk medicine. In my opinion it would be marginal for Whitetails unless the range was under 100yds, and/or shot placement was ideal.

Wildcat,

I suspect it was meant to be a stab at humor, what he really likes is the Norma 308 M.

Personally for that action I would go with a 35 Whelen, good cartridge and also it fits in with the era.

Oddball, take a look at the 338-06 or the 338-06 AI. Send it in for a rebarrel and you have one good elk rifle. Any of the Mags will cause you to alter the feed rails and bolt face.

I had a .308 Norma on an 03A3, chambered by Shebal's Gun Shop in Fairbanks AK, and stocked by Paul Jaeger when they were still in PA. This rifle would fire a 180 grain Nosler Partition at 3159 FPS, chronographed, with no signs of excessive pressure. I haven't seen the .300 Win that will beat that yet!! I settled on a 200 gr. Nosler Partition at 2850 as an all-round load, and it killed about every type of game in AK, back before polar bears were put on the endangered list!! I say, go with a .308 Norma. Wish I still had it!!

Does the 03-A3 action still have the original barrel on it? If so what condition is it in, would you be willing to give it up?

The rifle was made by the Santa fe divsion of Golden state arms. It may be the other way around. It was never a military rifle but was chambered for 30-06. The chamber is junk and I sent it in for rebarreling last monday. It will now be a 6.5-284 win.
