HunterJim,
All the M/70 'Long Action' receivers are dimensionally the same externally. The difference is in the ejection port. The 'Long Magnum' calibers use the receiver with a lenghtened ejection port. The port is cut to the rear and a new scope base screw hole is drilled and tapped. The bolt stop and ejector are shorter, and the filler is removed in the magazine.

Have a great day,

The October, 2004 American Rifleman has a cover article on the Winchester M70 rifle.

The article is by Bryce Towsley, and on page 63 says "The rifle comes in four different action lengths -- super short, short, long and magnum -- and a myriad of barrel lengths, contours and materials."

I thought the M70 action length in the actions used for long and magnum cartridges were the same length. Can you M70 expects 'splain this to me?

Allan,your telephone is ringing.

The fact that the short Dakota rounds can be fitted in a standard magnum action is good as it is easier to find one to convert rather than trying to locate a 375 length action. Blackburn makes a magazine box/follower for it as well as the custom bottom metal.

Chuck,

What is the hole spacing for the rear scope mount base for a current production factory M70 in .375h&h?

I see them listed as either STD, 0.440" rear spacing, or 0.330" rear spacing in a chart in the Brownells catalog.

Thanks,

Thanks Chuck!

Chuck, if you'll be in Calgary or Edmonton between Oct. 7th and the 20th, I'd like to buy you a beer and have lunch or something. Let me know. I'll be hunting around Thanksgiving weekend.

Cheers,
CL

Does that mean that a cartridge like the 330 Dakota (designd to fit a 30-06 standard length action) has no benefit over a 340 Weatherby or 338 RUM -if they are chambered in a model 70 action??

I was hoping that the 330 Dakota would have a shorter bolt throw AND a slightly shorter, less heavy action than a 340 Wea. or 338 RUM if all were chambered in a model 70 action.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

The 30-06 action does have a shorter bolt throw. As has been stated previously outside dimensions on an 06 is the same as the 375 action. The difference is the 375 friendly action has had the rear bridge milled rearward, the bolt stop milled shorter lengthening the throw ultimately allowing the bolt to travel to the rear of the longer box, the ejector shortened, modifications to the reciever immediatly behind the box, and the fins at the rear of the rails machined square to the forward portion of the same rails. Because of machining the bridge rearward, the forward hole for the rear mount has to be recut shortening the hole spacing on this action.

Any competent smith can take an 06/short belted magnum action and convert it to accomodate the longer magnums. They are the same action.
