Hello Guys I am putting together a small ring project on a Czech action. I have had a great time reading many previous posts, viewing photos and following up on the many links folk have posted. I have a couple of questions this research has not resolved: If one wants a rounded effect to the stock in the area of the bottom metal inlet (as detailed by SDH in his book "Custom Rifles in B&W, in respect to the Fisher 30.06) I assume one option (a bit beyond my means) is to use Blackburn bottom metal unit ?? Is it possible to achieve the same effect by using a Wisner straddle plate and fitting it to a suitably modified military bottom metal ?? Does anyone have photos (or know where I might view some) of these sorts of options ?? Most nice mausers seem to have the top tang re-profiled to give a slimmer look/better line to the wrist area. Does anyone have or know of photos detailing this sort work ?? How far up the tang is the removal of metal carried - I can't see how one would avoid having a gap between the tang and the bolt sleeve if taken too far, or is a gap acceptable and not noticed ?? (I have studied the photo essay on surface grinding that was linked to some time ago, but couldn't quite follow it in this detail). Cheers - Foster

The rear tang is easy. Files, and then stone. Jack Belk made photos, and someone probably has a link. flaco

Thanks for the thoughts so far, and especially the photos SDH, the internet, along with your book are truly the best resources I have being "down under" and far removed from the "epicentre" of it all. The small ring action I have will take a large ring bottom metal OK, but I can see that its not going to work out with anything but the real Blackburn unit, which is beyond the budget. I think I will look at some blind mag options, I know they are not considered "proper", but this rifle will be carried, and carried and carried (in our very "robust" NZ mountain country) and as long as the balance point is correct, it would be very nice to use the slimness achieveable with the small ring to make it "fit" my hand . . . and last time I looked it didn't have any flats. Maybe I am taking this a little too far, I'll think on it some more. Cheers - Foster
