I'm having difficulty finding a .222 shooter at a reasonable price. Is it possible/practical to rechamber a .223? Or any other thoughts? NRA Benefactor Member US Navy Veteran

No. The 223 chamber is much longer. No one shoots 222s any more. And I sold my 222 reamer because no one wanted me to chamber barrels for it in a couple of decades.

What do you consider a reasonable price? I’ve got a Howa mini action as new with box, never fired. PM me if interested. Shoot Safe, Mike NRA Endowment Member

You can buy a .223 and do a barrel setback then ream to .222 if your heart is really set on doing this. Not cost effective but doable. "Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading".

Zastava made some; Elk County Guns on Gun broker has a couple at $449. Howa's are also out there. I thought CZ was chambering in .222 also, but couldn't quickly locate any. And they're expensive now. Howa's are well-thought of and not super expensive.

I’m having a 222 built as we speak. Rem 700 action, Shilen barrel, Mcmillan stock. Won’t be cheap, but very likely, accurate. NRA Patron member

If you have a Remington action then I have a good 222 Remington take off barrel that would go cheap. 222 Rem is a great round. I love my deuce! The only easy day is yesterday!

Thanks for the replies guys. I do have two .223's (Rock River Varmint and a 700 Varmint with a newly installed Brux barrel that shoots too good to mess with). Appreciate all the advice. Mike NRA Benefactor Member US Navy Veteran

Keep your eyes peeled at LGS or pawn shops. Many folks trade them 'cause they know nothing about them. To make one the cheapest way is to either buy a used M700 Varmint Special or make one with an aftermarket heavy barrel and a .223 Rem 700 action. I saw a Rem 788 in .222 sell last year for $300. My friend bought it and it shoots great with handloads.

In the real world, the only advantage the 223 has over the 222 is brass availability .

Yep. But it has a nice long neck.

I have a L-46 Sako in .222 and they are available on GI an other INternet stores..Also can be had in Sako L461 and SAko A-1 I love my SAko L-46 clip model of yesterday, nothing today can compare in quality for a hunting rifle for varmints up to and including deer in my case.. The run from $900 to $1200.. I will reluctantly recommend the Rem 788 junky and ugly and shoot pin holes 99.9% of the time.. They have sorta caught on because they shoot and lately Ive seen them for $400 to $500, but Im sure there are still a few that bring $275 to 300??? I love the caliber, and really don't care for any other for what I use a hot 22 for..
