I need some help!! I have a standard 30-06 Brno de luxe rifle. It shoots 2 bullets almost in the same hole at 100m ..... the third is about 5mm from those two and after that the group start opening up like a street ladies legs!! What might be the cause? The crone was redone and the barrel is free floating accept for the "recoil lug" that is standard. The same happens with different loads. Please give me some ideas where to look for the problem.

5 mm is about a quarter inch......and that amounts to about a 1/4" group for three shots at 100 meters. Most folks I know would love to have this kind of problem....they'd be online bragging about it. Don't mess with this thing...it's fabulous! And leave those street ladies alone too!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I agree with Vapodog. How many animals need more than three shots from a 30.06? It's probably as the barrel heats up it changes harmonics and sends bullets in different directions. I agree with Vapo and Fjold. Simply let it be assuming everything is repeatable. I have a 7mm08 that will put the first two shots touching. 3rd shot goes high and right and opens the group to about 1inch sometimes a little less and some times a little more but never more than 1.25 inches. Fourth shot opens things to about 4 inches or more at 100 yards. She is definately climbing. I am lucky if the 5th shot even hits paper. Not what most like or want from their rifle; but, I have driven this rifle 15 hours across the US on some very bumpy roads three separate times and shot it when temps where very hot to very cold, in the rain, sunshine , and snow and it does the same thing every time and I have never had to adjust the scope upon arrival. Well I just leave her alone. If I can't get her done in 3 shots it is time to let her cool off because chances are I would need to cool off as well.

Make that .196850395" There were many days I would have given my eye teeth to get my benchrest rifle to give me that. I would count myself very lucky and buy some lottery tickets. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I suspect the barrel is heating too much with three shots. Try letting it cool down after the first three shots until it is just warm to the touch, them shoot two more. Or, wait five minutes between each shot. I am assuming you are talking about shooting game larger than prairie dogs. If so, 3 shots into a group as small as you're describing is excellent! I have seen your problem which really is not much of problem on skinny sporter barrels. My heavier barrels can put 30 rounds under an inch in a short time but the heavy barrels just don't move much. I have never shot a deer twice so it is no big deal anyway if it walks a little on the third round at the range. You will get a bigger difference with a clean barrel vs a barrel with a few fouling shots. The clean barrel shoots slow and low on the first shot. Don't lose any sleep over what you have and good luck to you this hunting season.

Methinks, also heat problem is likely...when factory barrels are made...a lot of them are straightened, trueing them up. OK, then they will try to move or move very slightly towards where they were originally when heated. Now, if you have a "Premium" custom barrel...the "premium" barrel is never straightened...so hot or cold the barrel doesn't move because it doesn't have the straightening stress built in. At least, that's what the barrelmakers have told me. I would just live with it, the first couple shots is all you want anyway..after that if you miss, the game is likely out of range by then. I'd suggest looking in the mirror. You have three options: 1. Enjoy your rifle. 2. Sell it to someone who would appreciate it. 3. Spend a bunch of money on a custom 30-06 that will probably shoot no better. Seriously though, it would not suprise me if a standard sporter barrel shifted POI as it heated and fouled up. Otherwise, sounds like you have a good serviceable rifle. GVA
