Left hand conversions

Over the years I have heard of the occasional gunsmith who converted various actions to left handed operation. In fact I have one, a 1941 model 70 Winchester, so converted. It came to me already converted with only speculation as to who might have done the switch over.

I always seem to be a day late when I find out about a smith who does conversions. I checked recently with one and yes, he has done them and no, he doesn't do them any more.

I realize there are good left handed actions out there, I just picked up a model 70 on which to build a 400 Whelen. I have had no luck finding any left handed Daly Mausers and wish I had bought a dozen of them when they were available.

I would love to recreate a Sedgley Springfield in one or more of the original calibers Sedgley offered. Examples of lefty Sedgleys are few and far between and often prohibitively expensive.

So in my long winded, round about manner, I pose the question, does or will any gunsmiths convert a Springfield to left handed? Thanks.

Mart

Back in the 30's Sedgley made custom rifles on the Springfield. They offered several versions including a left handed conversion.

I have run on to just two of the left handed Sedgleys over the years, one was considerably over priced for the condition and the other, while pristine and most likely not over priced (slightly over $2500), was priced well beyond my means at the time.

I have been fond of the Sedgleys as well as Griffin & Howe rifles for quite some time and they used Springfields for much of their work. The Springfield, to my eye, makes a very classy custom rifle. Regrettably, they are all right handed saving a few odd converted ones.

I am certainly not an authority on Sedgleys. I have picked up some bits and pieces of information in my gun travels and love to read about and study on them when the opportunity arises. There are many here who could answer your questions more thoroughly than I can but I hope that this helps.

There is a fair amount of information on the Sedgley Springfields and some on the conversions to left handed. What I am most interested in is finding a smith who could or would do a similar conversion on a Springfield.

What I have to say is in regards to Mod 70s.

I have 3 pre-64's thast are converted.
A .458 by Duane Wiebe
a .300 H&H by Bob West, and Duane converted the bolt stop to minic the original one as I don't like the way Bob did the bolt stops. I've had two others by West over the years
a two barrel in .243 or .30-06 by Tom Burgess, now deceased. Never had a converted Springfield.
I have had chances at converted Mousers. Don't know who did them. I know Roy Gradel (deceased) did some
The LH Mathieu has a lot of Springfield look, but a push feed
Sorry that this isn't much help on a Springfield.

If you get a change, it would be great to see some pictures of these left hand conversions.

Here is a couple of pictures of mine. I suspect a Bob West conversion. The screw on the left side of the receiver is the bolt stop. Not a great system. I would love to see how Duane worked his magic on yours with the original bolt stop. This one was rebored to 35 Whelen by Cliff Labounty and I fitted a Post 64 LH take off stock.

You might check with Gary Stiles. He has done a lot of work for me and has become a good friend. I know he has done several conversions of Mausers making them into LH guns. I have seen photos of them and they look great. I know he says that he wont do them again due to the work involved, however if a guy was willing to pay for his time….I would guess he may be talked into such work. If you did get him to agree to the work….it would be very high quality work.

I did talk to Gary. He seems like a really nice guy. He did indicate that he didn't do left handed conversions any more so I did not press him about the issue. I do like his work.
