I'm doing a 404 jeff conversion using a 300 rum M70. I picked up a Williams bottom metal for it. Has anybody done the same and if so any problems?

Thanks
Roger

I have that same conversion on a Model 70 with the Williams bottom metal and looks and works great. If you want the Williams with the satandard model 70 release button, I will gladly sell mine to you. I want the the one with the "Oberndorf" type florplate release.

I prefer the Oberndorf myself. Did you use the stock 300 rum follower? Was there any mods done for correct feeding if you recall. Or was it a rebarrel and go.

Thx
Roger

Sorry, I may have led you astray. I did do it on a Model 70 PF action and, because it wouldn't feed, I sent it to Dennis Olson to have it worked on. Dennis told me he wouldn't work on a PF action and that my alternatives were to buy a CRF action or he would convert mine. I was curious as to how it would look by having it converted and told him to go ahead. When I got it back (23 1/2 months later), he did a great job. It looks like a Classic Model 70. He changed the follower and magazine box (it has "windows" in the side, forward so the shoulder clears on the case) to accomaodate the .404 and altered the rails to make it feed properly.

My action was originally a .300 WinMag and not a .300 RUM. According to the guys here on the forum, a .300RUM is a matter of a barrel change and possibly slight feed rail work but, most say it isn't required. After all, the RUM case is nothing but a .404 Jeffrey case with the rim slightly reduced (to fit a magnum bolt face) and the shoulder is moved forward and sharper. I be inclined to believe the guys who say it is merely a barrel change. I had no problems with three different brands of .404 cases (Norma, BELL and converted RUM Brass) fitting the bolt face, it's only like .007" different than the .404. I'm sure the RUM follower will work properly, if not, you can get one from Brownell's.
