Marc, these were Mel Forbe's Ultra Light Arms set up for mass production. Colt bought his company and set him up to run thier new addition and sell bolt action rifles. Soon after that, Colt seemed to decide they didn't want to be in the gun business after all,(at least not to the public) and dropped the idea. Mel Forbes bought his name back I believe, and is doing his thing once again. I have never owned a ULA rifle, but evrything I have heard of them says they are a very good firearm, and the Colt versions should be no differant. As a plus, if you ever decide to get rid of it, you'll have that lucrative Colt collector market to dip into. Perhaps one of the other posters has personal experience with these and can help more. - Dan

My understanding is that the ones made under Colt management were nowhere near as well made as they had been under Mel Forbes, and that now, quality, as well as the price, are back where it was.

Hey Dog, for $399 I doubt you could get burned. I handled half a rack-full over at Scheels in Billings this past winter. While a bit "cheap" in certain area's, I thought they were a heck of a deal with a lot of good features for the price tag!

Mark,

As folks noted the Colt Light Rifle was based on Mel Forbes' design, but set up for mass production.

They are orphans now.

I bought two of them for our San Diego SCI fund raiser in February, and I thought they were excellent rifles for the money. I would not mind having one at all.
