Took a chance on a rifle listed on Gunbroker.com,bid on it and was high bidder.
The rifle is listed as "BRNO Action with stainless 35 Whelen 24 in. barrel ,plastic stock.I e-mailed the guy and asked him what twist was the barrel and who made it,He didn`t know.All he knew was it was a Blue BRNO action but the safety had been changed?And the barrel was stainless and in 35 Whelen with a Redfield one piece base installed.I have a 3 day inspection period after I receive the gun here to keep it or send it back for a refund.I am not familar with a BRNO action at all but for
$285.00 dollars I thought I would take a chance.What should I look for in inspecting the gun?I don`t expect custom fit and finish for what I paid ,but I don`t want to get hurt either.
If it will load and fire with out blowing up in my face,It could make me a good "beater" rifle to put a 4 x scope on and go hunting with or as a loaner for my son in law when he comes down from Camp Lejune.Any suggestions as to checking this gun out would be a great help.

take it to the range and tie it to a tire using old T-shirts as protection and fire it into the berm.

Inspect the case for flaws and if it's ok.....you have a $285 gun.

That's dirt cheap and you can't expect much more than that.

It may be a VZ-24. If so, and its in good condition, you have a nice action to work with. Further customizing might be in order.

The first thing I would do is check the headspace before I shot it. If you don't have the guages, take it to a local smith and have it checked out.

30-06 guages will work.

Thanks Guys for your advice.I will get my gunsmith to check it out.When I bid on the gun there were some photo`s posted on the website it was listed on,In the photo`s it looked alright,but I`m no gunsmith,just a old redneck from Bama.I have wanted a 35 Whelen for a long time and this might be a way to get one,but maybe a New H&R single shot or a Remington CDL would be a safer choice. I don`t know.

It's a vz-24, in a ?"bulter creek?" stock, with looks like a bold or timney trigger, and a redfield base. Not a bad deal for $285, considering that is MUCH less than the parts, if the barrel is stainless.

I'd put a magnet on the barrel, just to be certain.

So, if it was mine, I would glassbed the action, and go shoot.
unless you are planning on shooting barnes 250s out of it, the twist is be a non-issue as you can shoot 120gr.357bullets all the way to 250gr RNs out of ALL of the 35 caliber twists.

Jeffeosso, Thanks for your response,That I got it SO CHEAP, is making me have second thoughts about the gun being legit.Please excuse my ignorance but what does the magnet on the barrel mean? As bad as I have wanted a 35 Whelen I just do not have a good feeling about this gun.My late Fathers voice has been ringing in my old head
"Son if it sounds to good to be true..."I think might have been better off doing what I wanted to do and getting a Browning BLR stainless 30-06 and finding somebody to Rebore it to 35 Whelen.

Looks like you got an excellent deal to me. I've bought a couple of very similar deals from the Auction sites and was always very happy.

the magnet will verify that it's a stainless barrel... just check that!!

if a guy had the stock cheap in his shop, a vz2 action from 2 years ago, and a AB barrel, it's a good deal for everyone.. if it's a "maker" barrel, someone started a project and got board.

I'm curious too. What will the magnet tell us?

I am pretty sure that a magnet will stick to most if not all 400 series stainless steel. Maybe not as strongly as on chrome moly, but it problably will stick. I know there are some 300 series stainless steels that a magnet won't stick to, but I don't think you want your barrel made from one of those.

Sounds like a good project rifle actually. I've got some spectacular deals on the unfinished projects of others.

If you poke around on Ebay for a while you'll find lots of goodies for a Mauser 98. It's one of the things I check for every day on Ebay.

That would look good in a Boyds JRS Classic laminate stock with after a treatment with Gun-Kote.

Stainless rifle barrels are made with 400 series steels are are quite magnetic. The magnet tells you nothing.

looks like I was wrong.. I don't touch stainless if I can help it, unless it's the 300 series for knives.

Looks like a great buy. If you have or like the .06 I think you are going to love the Whelan. Like the other posters have said. 1. gunsmith check and headspace, After that, enjoy.
