What is the difference bettween these two? Is there any place that I could get case dimensions? I heard somewhere that the working pressure for the 450 Nitro is about the same as hot loaded 45-70. I am thinking of rechambering my ruger 45-70. Thanks

The 45-120 Sharps is essentially a lengthened 45-70. As I understand it the 450 NE is somewhat larger in diameter at the head with more body taper than the 45-120 and the same 3.25" case length. Casey [This message has been edited by CASEY (edited 03-06-2002).]

Just search under +450+NE around these forums, alot of people want to do a 450 NE this way. Of course most will be shooting 300, 350 and 405 grainers at modern .45-70 velocities ;-) Have fun! Hermann ------------------

The 45-120 Sharps has a COL of 4.16 with th case being 3.25 The rim OD is .597 and base is .506 The 45-70 has a COL of 2.70 with the case being 2.10. The rim OD is .600 and base is .500 The 450 NE has a COL of 3.85 with the case being 3.25. The rim is 6.26 and the base 5.48. Take this as you may. Have you thought about the 470 NE as there is factory ammo available for it? Please keep us updated on your choice.

For .450 NE only rechambering is necessary. For .470 I have to rebore. The .450 should have the same penetration, its even an elder round. There are more .458 bullets around for the reduced loads most of us will be shooting in such a thing. Bill Ruger should read this threads. Good shooting! Hermann ------------------

I was actually thinking about a rebarrel from Pac-nor. Just my two cents. DPM, do you do alot of reloading? Just wondering.

JAG, Thanks very much for the case dimensions. I still have some homework to do on this project, but I would like to stay with .458 bullets. I do reload but only for a few different cartridges. I don't think that I will have any problems fitting the 450 nitro/45-120 into my Rockchuker press. I load for .416 Rigby and there still is some room.
