I've read that the M48 action is a bit shorter than the K98. Seems like it might limited choices for custom rifle build ups.

Has anyone built a 9.3X62 or .458 or other magnum using the m48 as a starting point? How did it turn out. did you run acrossany problems?

This issue has been hammered out previously'

Do a search under M48

The M48 is a large ring, large thread M98 type of action that is built to the small ring length.

It is 1/4" shorter between trigger guard screw centers. However, the magazine box is only about .090" shorter than a standard length M98. (3.230" as apposed to 3.320") The feed ramp is much shorter than a standard M98 so there is only room to lengthen the magazine to the rear, perhaps another .060".

Cartridges suitable for this action fall into the "short" or "intermediate" length. (about 3.200" COL would be the max, 3.250" with the rear of the magazine extended by thinning down the rear wall.)

Some M98 accessories (large ring) such as barrels, triggers, safties, (some) mount bases etc. will work. Anything tied to the length such as bottom metal, firing pins etc. will not, unless perhaps they are for small ring actions.

Stocks are available, but one has to look for them. It is said that a small ring stock can be easily modified to work.

Do the M48 search and you will find all the info you need and then some.

Look in the Military Rifles forum, there was some discussion there about it. Many places now are offering stocks designed for this action, so that shouldn't be a problem. I was going to measure the magazine on mine a little later for you, but I see wildcat junkie beat me to it.

Good luck,
Todd

Go back to page 4 on the Gunsmithing topic.(11-19-02)

The thread is titled "One more stupid question and I will shut up".

The M48 subject got pretty well thrashed out on that one.

The M48 search will also get results on the "Military and military surplus" page.

The M48 seems to be getting a lot of attention as of late, perhaps rightfully so, as it seems like it would be ideal for the new crop of WSMs and SAUMs.

There was also a commercial version (VZ500) marketed in the mid 60s I have two of these, new, as in never barreled. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] Speculation has it that Herters imported these actions and barreled actions.

I think that we are going to hear a lot more about the M48s and perhaps the VZ500s also.

FAC (www.gunstuff.com) has a few items for the intermediate action Yugo m24/47, m48, m48a.

BTW, they're a whole lotta' fun in the original caliber too, 8x57js.

Not that I'm predjudicial or anything!
