The floor plate on this winchester is very hard to latch. The pin that holds the floor plate closed does not want to engage and seems to always rotate. I sometime have to hit the floor plate for it to stay closed. Is there an easy fix for this? Do I need a new trigger guard assembly which houses the floorplate pin?

Take the retaining pin out and see whats binding.

I have a newer classic m70 and i had to file the notch in the floor plate alittle deeper, And a pre 64 i have the push button would click and I had to use a plastic pen to push it in it was so hard. I punched the retainer pin out and cleaned up any burrs on the button and found the spring was binding so I also clipped one coil of the spring. works tits now.

Mine was having trouble holding when new. I had to loosen the forward action screw and re-align the floorplate (as it was slightly off-center). Works like a charm, now.
