Time to get a new barrel for my 6x284.Currently I have a 26" Hart with 1in10 twist. A gunsmith says Harts are slow barrels. That I should get a Boughton 5C Barrel.Their web page says they shoot faster.Gunsmith said It took a 26"Hart BBL to get the same MV out of a 22" Boughton Barrel. Is that true? I'm thinking of going for a 1in 8 twist. So I can shoot those 100plus gr bullets.

I’m sure that Hart would be interested in knowing that they make “slow†barrels. bewildered

Broughton 5c barrels are faster than a normal barrel with the use of boat tail bullets. In a 8twist I'd sure be talking to who's bullet I want to shoot as to velocity you may not need all the case capacity of a 6x284 may want to look at the 6br or 6 Dasher case instead. You will have an increase of appr 100/200fps more with a 5c barrel I kind of figured Tim North was pulling my leg but I got pretty close to 200fps more. The mistake your gunsmith made was comparing a 5c to a regular barrel he should of compare to an 5r barrel since they are the same. Broughton 5c barrel is used by alot of the LR match shooters and you might want to call Tim also and see what he thinks of your idea he got me headed in the right direction with a 6.5x284 and 300wsm with a 5c barrel and he also shoots the LR matches plus he is just a nice guy and a world of knowledge. It's a shame your gunsmith didn't do alittle more research on the 5c/5r subject instead of throwing out bad comments about a good company. To gain the benefit of a 5c barrel it has a limited application over a standard barrel.

My BS detector just went off... Sounds like your gunsmith is related to Broughton. Next to Douglas, Hart is probably the oldest custom maker of highly accurate barrels in the US.
Where is the test data to support the gunsmith's claims? And, who did the testing if so done?
That detector just keeps ringing in my ear.......

I don't know about slow, but a Hart is one of the most ACCURATE barrels you can buy.

I'm with the others. You need a new gunsmith. He seems to have some sort of vested interest in Broughton.... (He probably just happens to have a "spare" barrel that he needs to move....)

I was just wondering what makes you think you will need a new barrel soon after only 900 rounds. I would think about that as well. Make sure you borescope it and not just take someone's word. I have had a few that only needed the throat cleaned up a bit instead of replacement. I just worked new loads seated out a bit farther.
