I would like to square up the sear on the trigger on my Sako. After a brief trail with a piece of flat aluminium, some 400 grit sandpaper and some oil I decided not to go any further without better tools. A friend suggested I use a piece of glass and some paste to get the grinds flat but I'm not sure how I can get it all perfectly square by hand. Just how perfect does it need to be and are there any tools or jig I could make up to ensure a straight and square edges?

I have found that the more closely you can hold the angles square, the more uniform the pull. Ideally you want an even bearing surface between ALL the pieces. It's pretty tough to keep the pieces square without the aid of a jig. I use a milling machine to square and set the angle. To apply the right amount of "finish", I will clamp the sear in the vise and lay a flat piece of steel on top of the vise next to the sear so that both planes are aligned. The steel plate is used as a guide. With a little practice, it only takes a few seconds to set up and the sears angles come out square! Hopefully this makes sense. If not, send me a PM with your email address and I will shoot you a digital image showing how it looks.

Express, one of my favorite tricks is to use a the jaws of a bench vise which will allow exposing only the surface which you want to square and polish. You can control the angle and the amount of expose surface to work, and the vise jaws will be parrell so the square is assured! Makes the job easy and well done. In other words, what MALM said!
