Is there any special prceedure to reshaping the ebony on the foreend of a rifle. Can it be sanded? Or does it need to be polished?
Any help would be appreciated.

It's harder than a lot of other woods, but it still can be shaped with conventional wood working tools (rasps, files, scrapers, sandpaper). Breathing the sanding dust from it is not a good idea.

If you need to remove much material the Nicholson pattern makers rasps work well. If not that much needs to be taken off you could start with a 1st or 2nd cut file and progress to finer grades of abrasive paper. If you need to repair or fill cracks you can use the black super glue that you can find at guitar shops.

Heed Craigster's advice on not breathing the dust. Use a dust mask at the very minimum when working with it.
