[Confused] I am in the process of putting a decelerator pad on a mcmillan stock. I hollowed out about 1" of the stock to put in something stronger to attach the pad to. Tried devcon two ton epoxy, but it did not work. The epoxy melted the foam inside the stock when it got hot, and bubbled up?
What should I use?
Thanks Raghorn

Get some Acra-glas gel from Brownells...it is cold set two part epoxy and doesn't need air to set and it holds well with little srinkage and is durrable.....hth..good luck and good shooting!!

Hollow out the stock. Fit and glue a 1" block of wood in the hollowed out section. Acraglass works fine for this. After it has cured, square the end and attach the pad to the block with screws.

Good luck,

Depending on the stock, and the barrel weight, and if I need weight in the butt for balance, it usually is a block of maple (got lots of cured maple hanging around), or sometimes I mix up a batch of epoxy resin (the boat building stuff) with glass flock and pour in. Just be sure to go to bare fiberglass on the inside of the stock and get all the foam off, and rough up the inside of the stock for a good bond. Acraglass is good also, but a little more costly if you need a large amount.

If your epoxy is getting hot enough to melt the foam, then your mix ratio is wrong. Hot curing epoxy is weak and full of bubbles. The slower the cure, the stronger the epoxy, to a point. It can be too slow and never fully cure.

I removed the decelerator pad from my Mcmillan stock in order to put some weight at the rear of a varmint custom I had built. In order to secure the pad back on, I used proprietery two-pack epoxy glue, nothing special. It works just fine and is very strong, I used a linnisher to ensure that both the rear of stock and the pad were completly flat.
Hope this helps.
