Got my bolt body back the other day after having the handle cut off and replaced, kept the firing pin and bolt shroud and of course like kids will do I played around with it a bit. Was 100% sure I put it back together right but now that I put the bolt assembly together the safety won't go to the 3:00 position and fire. Safety goes to 12:00 and 9:00 bolt opens in both of those positions. Gun is a Husky, 96 Mauser.
What did I do?
I'm fairly savvy but I'm sure I'm missing something here, please help me out.
Thanks

My immediate thought is this: if you look from the rear of the rifle, the gun fires with the safety at 9 o'clock, safe, but with the bolt free is 12 o'clock, and full safe/bolt locked is 3 o'clock.
My next thought is: if you have all that and the prob persists, that perhaps you do not have the bolt shroud screwed all the way onto the body. It is easy to not screw it the full number of turns.

the 3 o'clock position [right side] should be the full safe side [original safety] 9 o'clock should be fire,if you had the bolt handle replaced with a bent one the bottom of the bolt handle might be hitting on the reciever keeping the bolt from closing fully, the last little bit. when that happens the safety won't go all the way to the right side and lock the the bolt. there is a cutout in the top of the rear edge of the bolt body that the safety engages in to lock the bolt from opening in the 3 o'clock position [full safe position] the safety won't go if this doesn't line up, try putting the bolt body by itself into the reciever and seeing how far it closes the notch should be straight up 12 o'clock you may need to notch the reciever or clean the weld on the boltup some more.

I had to put a rounded notch in the receiver on my m96 for the bolt handle. Jack belk told me how to do it so you dont go to deep. The depth of the notch in the reciever stops the bolt handle at just the right spot. Also depends how your handle is welded on. You might still have some square stup there.

Thanks guys you all are a wealth of knowledge. Turns out my bolt assembly is correct but the limiting factor is that I need to take a file to the reciever and notch it and the stock a bit to let the bolt come down further so the safety catch lines up with the notch in the bolt body. Thanks to all of you I'll be shooting in no time!
