The control round feed classic action was barrelled in 22-250 for a time. If you can find one and rebarrell it, I think you would be more than happy.

There's a fairly good article in this months "American Rifleman" about the model 70 and it addresses exactly what the difference between controlled feed and controlled push feed.

The .250 Savage is .155" longer then the WSSM's. You would have to load your 250's to a max length of 2.360". You will have to work with the feeding also. Because the WSSM system is designed for the 'fat' cartridges, you will have to deal with the magazine, magazine follower and the 'feed lips' in the receiver.

The .250 Savage requires a standard bolt face. A new bolt would be needed. If you want to use a cut down a CRF bolt, you would have to modify the right side bolt channel of the receiver to allow clearence for the extractor at the rear bridge, and even more so in the front bridge to allow for the extractor to jump over a chambered round.

There is no doubt in my mind that it would be best to cut a classic action (.243,.308 etc.)than to start with a WSSM. Trying to get a .250 Savage to feed out of a WSSM action will be a lot harder than trying to short'in an action that it already feeds out of. JMO. I would try to acheive the same length as the WSSM though. At least then it will have a common stock with other rifles and common bottom metal.
With out stock work this may be done for less than a grand but if you come up with an oddball length and have to have a stock built I think you would be lucky to have it done for less than three grand. But dang it would be sweat.

Mitchell, has an illustrated narrative of shortening a Model 70 by cutting and welding. It's worth a read, if you intend to do this.

I tried the very project you are going to try now. It will be very expensive. My rifle is on the original Kimber 84 action in a custom stock by Davenport. I still have feeding/ejection/accuracy issues and have spent oodles of money to make it right. The classic short action is smaller than the Kurtz Mauser action that was one of the premier actions for that caliber. You might rethink your options. I think a 250 Savage with the bullet out seated to 2.8 inches would be a very potent round .
