Is there a source for replacement front sights for these rifles. I want to use the lyman peep that is on it, but with it all the way down I am hitting close to a foot high at 50 yards. If I cant find a taller replacement, my only choice is to shoot heavy round nose bullets at moderate velocity.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Lyman and Marbles along with possibly Red field and a slew of other companies made sight blades for these. Check their sites and you should find something. They also show up on the auction sites.

Thanks for the input Thaine. Unfortunately none of these sites still offer front sights for the mod. 30, at least not that i can find. So, if anyone else has a specific source I would certainly appreciate it.

Also, any ideas on an approximate year of manufactured in the 5xxx serial no. range.

Watch ebay. Lots of front sights of various heights and manufacturers from time to time. Must know the correct height.

This was before my time and you are stretching my memories of men who taught me...

Wasn't the Model 30 Rem a commercial version of the military P14/M17 WW I rifle? Did they use the same front site? I would research this carefully. Later the Remington company did a model 720 rifle, another use of the M17 action. My best buddy gunsmith told me that he had seen them listed in other calibers like .270 and .257 Bob but never saw guns, only in '06.

Beyond that you hit the gun shows and look for the 'smith with a ton of parts. Might just give you the sight blade you need since there is no call for them anymore... Everyone has to have a scope some of which are so worthlesssss... Luck, happy trails.

Check with Spingfield Sporter (724) 254-2626. They used to sell the front sights for the 1917's in various different heights. I don't recall in the rem30 used the same sight base or not. You used to be able to pick up an assortment pack if I remember right. Other than that it is a fairly easy part to make if you have a friend with a mill.

This is from my M30 in .35 Rem. It's stamped MARBLE No. 11. (It uses a Lyman 48R rear but was D&T'd for a scope when I got it so I put an old mount and scope on it.)
I measured it for you and 1/2 the barrel band dia. is .339", subtract that from the total sight height of 1.360 gives you a bead about 1.021 above the line of bore. This is an earlier gun (s/n 101xx) than my "1906 CAL. .30" (s/n 233xx).

The 06 also has the Lyman rear but the front blade has two pins and is .976 above the line of bore.

No pics of the 30.06, sorry.
