Reboring Two Pre-64 Barrels - Comments Please

I have picked a 'smith to rebore two barrels, one is a fwt 22" '06 and the other a standard 24" '06, yeah I am overloaded with '06 barrels (and rifles).

I have chosen to rebore one of these to 338-06 and the other to 35 Whelen. My questions, which would be the 338 and which the Whelen. I am leaning to having the 24" std go the 338 direction with 1:12 twist (I want to shoot 200-225 gr bullets) and then taking the fwt 22" to Whelen with 1:12 twist also with desire to shoot heavier bullets in 250+gr.

I have 300 Wby, 35 Whelen (1:16 twist) and 375 H&H.

I am asking for any and all comments.

Are you saying reboring or replacing the barrel, if you rebore there may not be enough meat for the bore size. Check with your smith!

Plenty of meat on the standard bbl. Danny Pedersen rebored an '06 pre64 std bbl to .366 for my 9.3x64. Don't know about the fwt. Bob

The outside dimensions of a 30-06 Fwt. barrel is the same as the 358 Win barrels. Therefore, it should work for the 35 Whelen.

A classic forgery is to rebore a Pre-64 .308 Fwt. to a .358 Win which is a bit more rare.

Just the comments I seek and VFR1, Dan is my MAN! He is sure of the std barrel but questions the fwt as well. We shall see after he does the measuring.

MikeN, yes reboring vs rebarreling. I just had to try the $275ish vs. the $450ish.

Will post once the work is complete in time for a NWT moose hunt in Sept '06.

I am trying to have the two barrels work with the same pre-64 fwt action and McM stock but have the std barrel stock in case.

JLS

....ooops! I re-read your post, and see you're NOT looking to re-chamber to .338wm. Sorry.
