I have a M-700 BDL that I am thinking of refinishing. I have done many stocks but non that have the ebony forend and ebony on the end of the pistol grip. i was wondering if anyone has any ideas or tips on refinishing this rifle. Especially how to deal with the ebony. Thanks, Rick

Are you sure it's ebony, or even stained walnut? Seems they have a plastic appearance. This is as much a question as a answer. Somebody will chime in. If it isn't, you can replace it. I've done this a couple times. Isn't to bad a job. dempsey

Plastic, sorry!
Sand it with 240 and clearcoat it. If you are doing oil... yeccch, leave it alone

I've refinished a least a half dozen or so Remington stocks. The worst part is removing the original finish. Whatever they use, it's durable. It usually takes 2-3 coats of stripper to get it all. Once you're down to bare wood, it's a pretty straightforward job. Oh, you might test the stripper on the forend tip in the barrel channel, some strippers will damage plastics.

Easy with the stripper. It will eat the white line spacers, grip cap and forend tip. Then you have a job!

You can scrape that finish off with a hacksaw blade that has the teeth ground away, then sand and finish...I have made a number of scrapers in various shapes and configurations and scraping will save you a world of sanding out gouges from course sandpaper and rasps. You can soften the finish greatly with Epoxy remover, but keep it off the spacers, grip cap and recoil pad.
