I had a conversation today with a gentleman that is trying to get into the gunmakers guild. What exactly is required? He said he had some guns He was taking to the show. I was going to ask more questions about it but the battery on my phone crapped out and he was busy anyway.

Are there judges that look these over to make sure the work is up to par? How does it work?

Thanks

The full set of "rules" can be obtained from acgg@acgg.org or 307 587 4297. There is a judging process that's not nearly srict enough (in my opinion)...but there is the process.

If the gentlman you were talking to had already gone through the process he will have filled out paperwork and found 3 ACGG members to vouch for him and be accepted for the submittal of his work. I hope he has done this as they do not accept "walk ons".

I'm sure Bill has it figured out.

After going through the paper work and obtaining the sponsorship of three regular members, the applicant's work is presented for approval at the Guild's annual meeting and exhibition in Reno. The submitted work is displayed anonymously in a room accessible only to regular members and all attending regular members vote by ballot to accept or deny. After the voting the applicant is called into the room to see which way the sword is pointing.

All in all it does not make for a peaceful nights sleep the night before...

Yes it was. Please understand these questions were asked only to satisfy my own curiosity. As I said I was going to ask him further questions but my phone battery quit and he seemed very busy so I didn't bother calling him back.

I did contact ACGG via email and got this very helpful response from Jan:

Here's a nutshell recap:

Those applying for Regular membership apply in the categories of: stockmaker, metalsmith, engraver, metalfinisher, or other (specific such as checkering specialist).

Applicants provide: application which includes which category they want to apply for; signatures of three current Regular members who attest that their work meets at least the minimum standards acceptable to be admitted; and the names and contact information of 6 customers willling to provide a reference.

Two examples of work are displayed for the membership committee to review, based on a point system depending on the category applied for that a certain number of points must be met. Then the work is displayed for the Regular members at the annual meeting to review and vote whether or not it's acceptable.

The voting standards is do they meet minumum acceptable to become a member.
