I recently went throught the exercise of getting a BRNO ZKK 600 rifle and a 1952 Model 70 for custom rifle projects. My original plan was fuzzy but it was 280 Remington on the Model 70 and a 9.3x62 on the BRNO. Dollars are sitting with my smith to get one started, but over the last couple of weeks I have been plagued with indecision, and its real close to permantent decision time.

I want a good shooting 7mm out of this, thats a known. All was going well until Allen Day did his write up on the 7mm Saum, and I got to thinking why not get a 7mm Saum in a model seven. This was coupled with my thoughts are the Model 70 action is big, reletively heavy, and a 280 in this action seems kind of a waste of a whole lot of effort. My logic is I went through the effort of geeting a really good Model 70 action, why not use it for something more suitable. Random thoughts of the moment are 300 H&H, 404 Jeff, 7mm Rem/Weatherby/STW,
338-06, 9.3x62. I really don't need another 30 cal anything, I have a pre 64 70 375 H&H, and frankly I doubt I would ever really need a 404 ( I know it not about need, but I would like some practicality in this).

Anyway because the BRNO is a small ring it seems a 7x57 or a 280 on that action makes more sense.

I would note although I am not recoil shy, I don't see much purpose of cranking up this scale unless I have a reason, and my two sons perform better in 30-06 or less recoil range. Thoughts are around 8 1/2 lbs or on the model 70, so a "light" rifle isn't really what I had envisioned. If I went to a big mag I might add another 1/2-1 pund to that weight total.

Any suggestions? I was wanting to have at least one of these started in the next two weeks.

What are the magazines and actions set up for now? The ZKK might look nice as a carbine full or half stocked. With the long magazine it can be anything up thru a 9.3.

This rifle may be old and dented but it's nice. It's very handy to carry as it's narrow yet it holds six and weighs seven.

As to the M7 and SAUM's I think that the Kimber rifles have far more to offer in features that I like. Not sure if you want a composite stock or not but Kimbers go from five to six pounds in 7mm-08 and 7mm WSM. If I had the money for a custom smith on those other projects I would not bother with a M7.

The 70 action was a 06, but opening it up doesn't concern me, small cost in the overall job if I decide to go that way.

The Brno 601 is a 270 winchester currently.

Oh I went through the effort to get a 70 with excellent condition steel bottom metal so I wasn't planning on changing it.

If so for a small fee you could have the monte carlo removed along with the spacers and forend tip. Then shorten the barrel to 22" and have a barrel band sling swivel added.

Slightly differnt stock. Forend is the same but not near the drop at the rear. Same trigger, can't really see the scope mount stuff in the pic but shoulld have a little pop up on the rear.

But that looks to be a slightly different version of the same rifle.

Edit: I am not a fan of 27 cal, and the barrel is going to replaced, that much is certain.

Well the 270 is sort of an American 7mm. If it shoots well now that would be the path of least resistance.

The Brno I pictured above is a 7X57 on a long action. It's a light handy rifle as it is. One in 280 Rem or 7X64 would be the same weight if you like those cartridges.

Yeah your right on that would save a lot of hassle and dollars. But I bought it for the action really I wouldn't be happy with a 270 its not a 7mm. Its a personal prejudic I know, but a 270 would be just another rifle in the rack I would never shoot, unless I got one of my boys interested, and they would still be wiggling to get my 7x57.

I also have a very big selection of 7mm projectiles on my bench, I'm not looking right now but 1000-1500 rounds is a conservative estimate. I have only 2 partial boxes of 27 cal and maybe 40 loaded rounds.

The Brno I bought for a 7x57 or a 280, and that I am very comfortable with. But that makes fiddling with 280 and the model 70 even more pointless.

Closer, take the forend of the first, and add it to the first pic and you just about got it. No barrel band though. There must have been a lot of subtle variances in these rifles. I like #2 by the way, but isn't that a ZKM? Mine has the single set trigger which I am not planning on changing.

Just have your smith cut off the muzzle brake and here you go.

I don't think any smith on this good green earth could build a rifle as nice as that one, sans brake, for $2000.

Unfortunately for me my ZZK isn't ever going to be a 21H. Even throwing dollars at it won't get me there.

Ray A, had one up for sale while back also. it seems it was a 9.3x62.

Thoughts were to rebarrel this to a 7mm for the time bing and a new from scratch stock later, as I was planning on starting the model 70 first.

Bob Hagel is from your home state. He shot a 7mm Mashburn Super with a longish barrel. What could be better than that? Make the M70 into a long range 7mm.

Take a look at Clymers site and see how close the 7mm Mashburn Super is to the 7mm Weatherby Magnum. I bought some 375 Weatherby brass the other day and it chambers just fine in my 375 AI!

For the M70 a 7mmWeatherby. The ZKK, I'd turn into a Mannlicher beauty in 9.3x62.
