I have a couple of boxlock shotguns that had the receivers chrome plated at the factory. One has some rolled engraving. How thick is the plating and how much trouble is it to polish it off so can color case harden? One is a CZ and one is a Weatherby. Thanks!

Good hunting,

Andy

Andy, I had some chrome plating chemically removed from an action once and it worked out fine. It ended up a bit expensive at around $60 or so.

You would have to deplate it or chemically remove it to do the best job.

Chic,

Who did it for you. I'm going to restock both of these shotguns and have case colors done, so another ~$60 each isn't much in the scheme of things. Thanks for your help!

Chrome plating at the factory you say, Well chrome plating was found in WW11 to put Hydrogen bubbles within the molecules of the steel and weaken it. I would take it to a plating shop and have it removed professionally. Nickel plating is more desireable than chrome as well if you ever want that type of finish. Chrome plating will add from .003-.010" depending on whom plated it. Its not the best of ideas to begin with. Van
