Lots been written about this subject. Generally the saltwood years are from 1966 to 1972. The majority of the saltwood treated stocks show up from 1967 to 1969....about 90% according to experts.

The test for saltwood wood treatment is straight forward...find a bare spot of wood...like beneath the butt plate/pad or mag well inletting and a apply a few drops of silver nitrate. If it turns purple your OK and should it turn white....no good....you've got saltwood.

I've seen some very severe cases of corrosion develop in saltwood treated stock wood. Restocking is a guaranteed cure however, the wood is generally very figured and worth saving. If you scrape back and fully bed the barrelled action with AccuGlas or equal, you will have an impervious surface between the metal and wood. For all other areas an epoxy finish works well. You must recoat any surface that will be exposed to the wood.

Cheers, Ron
