Well here it goes. This is a continuation of a previous thread. I would like to find a gunmaker/gunsmith that would like to take on a pair of projects. I would like to make up two rifles that someone will gurantee half minute groups on. One will be a varmint 220 Swift, the other a sporting weight 25-06. I will only use pre-64 model 70 actions for the job. I would take under advisement the barrel manufacturer. I prefer cut rifle barrels especially Kreiger's. I would expect the price to be standard for the trade for both the barrel and the blueprinting of the action and the installation of the barrel. I have over 30 years of loading experience and have other resources near me to help work out the details of the loading. The 220 Swift can be on a light/medium varmint weight barrel configuration. The 25-06 must be contoured to an Orberndorf style to fit an existing custom rifle stock. I will send the rifle to the maker and let him look at the barrel shape. After all of the metal work is done I will ship the parts and have them inletted into their respective stocks. Am I forgetting anything????? I need to know what such work will cost and expected time of delivery. Are there any gunsmiths out there that are able to do this and for a decent price and gurantee accuracy??

pre-64 and kreiger are a winning combo. Now all you need is a guaranteed 1/2"moa shooter beer

If the gunsmith does not control the complete project how can he guarentee accuracy.. My gunsmith thinks the bedding has more effect of accuracy than the metal work.

When you find the smith that makes that guarantee, please let us know who it is and what his price is.

Any smith can build you a 1/2 MOA shooter.

I have that covered by the best I know of, but if that is what he thinks will do the deed so be it.

Sounds like you need to get a new gunsmith.

As a disclaimer, and as many of you know, I currently work for Hill Country Rifles.

I have been watching this and the other related thread with intrest. Thought that I would mention that Hill Country Rifles offers a 1/2" garentee for three shots on their custom rifles, and on top of that they do it with recommended factory ammo, not your handloads.

Tom Ga, I would come close to agreeing with your gunsmith. I would say that bedding is as important to accuracy as a quality barrel job. Hill Country does a lot of work making guns shoot sub moa just by correcting the bedding.

And I have made a lot of guns shoot sub MOA by simply re-cutting the crown. And like the company you are currently employed by, I too have had sub MOA successes through bedding, But never one without the other.

For a gunsmith to claim that "bedding has more effect on accuracy than the metal work", he is not being realistic, and only fooling himself.

And to make this not appear as a thread hijacking, lb404, you are going to hire someone else to do the stock work on your rifles? Don't forget that old saying, "Too many cooks spoil the stew". Big Grin

sounds as if you are going to end up with a couple of real shooters there lb! don't forget to keep the barrels cool while at the range.you may try to bring along a bag of ice or two to keep the barrels from getting too warm,or a portable battery operated fan

I too have taken factory rifles did a good bedding job on them and tighten groups up a lot.

Add that to a high end barrel with a good chambering job one has a good chance of getting a shooter.
