Gents,

Is there a commercial action that can handle the 416 Rigby? Not a custom, looking for an action that will be used on a wildcat. The kicker in this is, it has to be left-handed, and hopefully not on the full length Rigby length. I know, looking for the Grail.

Thanks,

Roger QSL

Roger,

Check out the Montana PH actions. I'm sure they will have them in Left Hand pretty soon if they don't already.

If you are ok with a 3.6" cartridge, then any mag length action will work for you.
That case is so big, there's plenty of room to lose, especially if you cut down on that generous taper.
How about a 416 caliber, on a 2.85" improved Rigby case? You'd probably get three down with a little work, and close to Weatherby performance.

So, I drew up a case, cut it to 2.85", gave it a .420" neck, same 45 deg shoulder, decreased taper to .570" at the shoulder (.008" per inch, for those interested).
It has 5.8gr more water capacity than the Rigby, and 2.4 more than the Weatherby.
You'll definitely get what you want.
I dubbed it 416 Rigby Unimproved.

If you drop the case length to 2.72" the 338 Lapua case is the way to go. Much stronger case design and only $1.30 each from Sinclair or Bruno's. Same bolt face size as the Rigby, just built hell for stout. I'd use a M70 or a Montana action, I built my 30/338 Lapua Imp on the 700 action, though it isn't a DGR, just a bench gun.

Mine is .584" at the base, .571" at the shoulder and has a 40 degree shoulder with a .405" neck length, and a .333" neck. Chamber is .335".

Using a .416 with a .446" neck, I come up with 125gr capacity on this one with a body length of 2.300", and 2.375" to the top of the shoulder.

2500 - 2600 fps with a 400gr bullets would be doable. I have a 416 Weatherby and it would come close, but fall a little short of it. OAL would still require a mag box of 3.750" or so to keep effective case capacity up high enough tho.

Is it going to be 416 cal?
