New barrel for Ruger 22 Auto Pistol
Guys,

The upper barreled receiver of the Ruger 22 auto pistols is the registered part. Have one with a skinny barrel. Seems to be very little on changing the barrel in the common literature.

Would like to provide my old pistol with a new threaded barrel. Have a machinist that does beautifully concentric threading for a suppressor.

Can anyone give me guidance on changing the barrel?

Thanks!

They are threaded and the feed ramp is part of the barrel. The receiver is fairly thin around the threads so extreme caution must be used when unscrewing the two.

Have not removed one my self, but at gunsmithing school we made a special wrench that clamped the reciever real good. They said the barrel on these are really tight and probably glued also.
Be careful.

I used my standard barrel/action wrench with turned aluminum bushings to pull the barrel off my MKI.

Then made a barrel to fit my tastes.

Rusty,

Very pretty indeed!

Did you find it particularly difficult to remove the barrel with the standard action vise and barrel wrench? Threads the normal direction?

Right hand threads, 13/16-20. I did have to back off the pressure a little on the action side of the wrench once the barrel started turning though as I had the wrench tight enough to pinch the barrel threads.
Perhaps that's part of why people think these barrels come off so hard, they over tighten the action wrench and effectively lock the barrel and action together? Just a thought.

Thank you for the compliments on the work. The blank was full size Annie surplus purchased through Numrich. (1.2" dia. x 19" long). I still have a chunk of it that I've been thinking of making a barrel for my High Standard 107.

I believe Clark and a few others have pre-turned barrels for the Rugers. Don't know if they offer threaded muzzles though.

It really depends what blows your hair back.

If a classy look isn't needed I'd look at Pac-lite.
