In the past I have bought a number of three-position, bolt shroud safeties for BRNO ZKK series rifles from PME (Precision Metalsmithing Enterprises). I need to buy some more of these bolt shrouds but can't seem to find the address for PME. Can anyone help me out?

PRECISE METALSMITHING ENTERPRISES INC 146 CURTIS HILL RD 6 CHEHAKIS, WA 98532 Phone: (360) 748-3743 Fax: (360) 748-1802 Jim Wisner of PME will probably see this and respond as well. A gunsmith working on a project for me tells me he's having trouble getting a PME safety for a M98 right now. We'll probably have to use a Gentry on this rifle.

While we are on this subject, has anyone used the Dakota bolt sleeve/3-postion safety for the 98? It looks like it has the full gas flange shroud similar to the 98. Thanks.

I corresponded with Jim Wisner 2 days ago. BRNO safeties are out of stock. He plans on having some in production maybe in February.

Precise Metalsmithing was closed down in Dec of 2002 as a direct result of the recession caused by 9-11. I have been operating PART TIME under my name. I still offer a M70 three poistion saftey for the Brno 600-602 and the CZ 550. Am currently out of inventory of them and have been for a while. Have 75 Brno safeties started, expect to have them done in Feb - March of 04. Also have 100 Mauser safeties that should be done about the same time. You have to realize that these parts WERE completely made on manual machines. Have been slowly converting my parts over the the CNC mills. Moved in most of the machinery from my father's shop into my shop the last two weeks. To get the CNC mills thru my shop door, had to remove the heads. Saw more parts than I want to for a while. Had to remove the motor's and unwire the heads and unbolt them. Could then move the bodies in, and with a small cherry picker could then reattach the heads. Over the coming year will hopefully manage to get caught up. James Wisner jwisner@quik.com

Thanks guys for the quick responses. James, I require two Brno ZKK bolt shrouds (one for a 602 and one for a 601 although, from memory, they are the same shroud). If you can let me know how much they will be, and what you anticpate postage to be, I can get some funds to you before February and then you can send them onto me when they are ready. One of these shrouds is destined for a 602 which is being rebarreled to .404 Jeffrey and won't be ready until around Feb or March so the timing is probably perfect. The other shroud is for a Brno that I am yet to buy so no hurry there, either. I also have a couple of M98 projects for which I will required 3-position bolt shrouds so I would appreciate a price on these, too. Plus, several of my mates are working on ZKK-602 projects and so there might be a couple of other orders coming your way, as well. Thanks again, [ 12-02-2003, 10:23: Message edited by: BwanaBob ]

Bob who are you getting to build you 404.What brand of barrel are you using. I have 2 brand new 602 actions and 404J would be a good use. I would plan to buy 2 of the new bolt shrouds. Mark

Mark, I am getting David Kerr (of Bundoora, Vic) to do the work and I am using a Sprinter .421" profiled barrel blank that I have had laying around for just such an occasion. Yes, the .404 is an excellent choice for a ZKK-602 as it only needs a little modification to get this great cartridge working in the Brno. Because it is only a little fatter than the belt on a .375 it will almost feed out of the unmodified magazine, the bolt face only needs a little bit of opening up and you can fit five .404s in that big magazine! With a little action polishing, a PME bolt shroud (I usually fit them myself as it isn't hard provided you follow the instructions and take your time), fit and finish a Geoff Slee semi-inletted stock, a quarter-rib and a parade of leaves on a good express sight and you have a very, very nice big game rifle for a fraction of the cost of a custom rifle. thanks for the info Bob. I must admit I would go for a .423 barrel as I believe that is the diameter of Woodleigh's. Mark

Mark, Yes, .423" is the correct diameter for the Woodleighs but many of the early .404s were .421" and they shoot Woodleighs, and any other .423" bullet, without a problem. I only went .421" because it was what was available at the time but you can now get Walther barrels in .423" without difficulty.

Mingbogo- I have used the Dakota/Grisel safety on a Mauser. I think it is the best looking of the bunch for the Mauser 98, contours nicely with the bridge. The old Jantz safeties look nice too, have one on my 416 Brevex. I've located a ZKK602 with a folding peep sight which will require the Wisner if I decide to change it. I personally don't mind the "assbackwards" safety, as some refer it.

fla3006: Thanks for the reply and glad to hear that you are pleased with it. I really like the looks of it and will definitely get one when I get to my 98 project. Thanks.
