I recently bought what I think, is a rather unusal version the the commercial Fn mauser .
The rifle is a hawthorn model 760. It has a very nice trigger with the side safty. I have herd this referd to as a sako trigger, and the part I really like is a very nice release catch on the hinged floor plate.
The barrel has markings from Montgomery Wards. And a nice banded style front site and fold down rear. It is chamberd for the 30,06.
Any body familiar with this version ? My asumption is the the action was imported and the barrel and stocked here in the states.
I have no Idea by who.
My plan is to build a .257 Roberts AI on the action.
Somthing I discoverd while playing around with it, is that beacuse of the outside the bow floor plate release , is the rifle fits prety well in the stock I have on hand that I took off a MK10. So that might increase my options for buying a preturned stock.
Anyway I think I did prety well at 375.00. Its a little more than I paid for my higgins but with the (sako?) trigger and the cool floorplate, I think its a better action.
Like to hear from you experts on the quality of this FN action and how rare is it ?
thanks

I had one like yours once. It was made on an FN Supreme action. Supposedly High Standard assembled them.

You might want to shoot the .30-06 before you pull the barrel. I have a High Standard barreled FN action (Sears) that shoots MOA or better with darn near every load I have tried. I quickly forgot about rebarreling it.

You may have to alter the feed rails to get the Ackley case to feed. I did this to a Mauser of mine. When I went back to .270 Win., it didn't want to feed the standard cases.

Good point.....I bought one once in 30-06 and made the mistake of shooting it first.....It's still a 30-06!!!

FWIW, if the action is capable of feeding the 25-06 may I suggest you ask yourself what you're getting in the .257 AI over the 25-06!
