I like Doug's idea best.. However, Brownells does sell a pretty nice H/S crowning tool. For crowning I much prefer high speed tool steel to carbide...

The Brownells tool cuts SS very nicely, but you have to stop every few revs, to brush out chips and reoil the pilot, to keep chips from getting into the barrel and scoring the rifling at the muzzle. Any burs left at the end of the rifling, can be removed with a round head of a screw as a lap, and a dab of 220 grit lapping compound, with a slow speed battery drill. Matter of fact, you can use the lap to clean up a slightly dinged muzzle without the tool. Pick a screw head twice the diameter of the bore, do it vertically for self centering, and clean out the grit before shooting.

I don't like the Brownell's tool and thier pilot [they call it a "spud"] is undersized, so I needed a .303 for a .308.

Anyway, I get better results putting the barrel in the lathe and cut the crown with a regular cutting tool.
