416 from a 7 mag?

Jeff Alexander416 from a 7 mag?
I've got a friend that shot my 416 Rem and wants to build one. He's got a 7 Rem Mag Model 70 donor and a 416 Barrel. (Left handed of course )
What is involved in this? Does the action have to have metal removed? Thanks, Jeff

MasteriflemanHe will probably have to replace the magazine box and shorten the bolt stop, both easy fixes. There might be feeding problems but, I doubt it. I doubt that he will have to lengthen the magazine well in the receiver. I converted a 'New" Model 70 to .404 Jeffrey and the only thing I had to have done is the feeding issue. Dennis Olson took care of that in fine order.

Make a 416 Taylor instead and then there are no issues.

Will....why a .416 Taylor and not the 416 Ruger?
I'm surprised as to how many are being built and already have been.

jeffeossoLOL, and when folsk want to have more power, they can rent the 416 AR reamer .... bigger case and more avaialble brass!!
Aint wildcating fun? I am of the few wildcatters that is afraid of pressure!!
One could have a 416 taylor, decide that 2300 is really its max, go to a 416 ruger, see that 2400 is really its max, and then run a 416 AR reamer in, and see that 2500 is doable .. all in the same action, and the rum brass is cheap

Coverting a M70 from normal magnum to long is not a big deal. You can replace the mag box, bolt stop and ejector or you can removed the spacer from the box, shorten the bolt stop and ejector. I've done both. That was all I needed on the several 7mags I converted to 7STW.
As usual just my $.02

xm15e2m4So did I understand Jeffeosso right?
The 416AR can be built on a mod 70 action?
Just wondering since I have one sitting on the shelf no one will buy.
I follow Rule #62.

Yep the 416AR is built to fit on a 06 length action. Don't even need to remove the box out of the back of the magazine.

jeffeossoyep...
jimmy J here built a 458 on a lefty... rebarrel and go...
the 416 AR is pretty much a drop in for that 7 mag..
the oal for the 416, 458, and 470 AR is 3.35, which drops right into a standard length action.. and if it feeds 7 mag, you are probably in darn good shape

olcripGoing from the 7 Mag to the 416 you will most likely have to widen the feed ramp to feed the wider bullet into the chamber. I had that problem going from a 300 Mag to the 300 Ultra Mag. It would pop the cartridge out of the action before it entered the chamber. The shoulder would not pass the narrow ramp. All I did was widen the ramp to the width of the front portion of the feed rails. Mercy me it feeds just great. I don't beleive you need to change anything else as long as it's a 416 Rem. Mag. based on the old H&H full length case.

MTMNew barrel, remove block from mag. redo bolt stop/ejector and you're good to go.

McCrayI have done three and I just ordered the new parts from Browning/Winchester and swapped them out. Opened the top of the receiver and there are two little mods to the rear of the feed rails and the back of the mag cutout to improve loading and feeding. Basically machining steps omitted from the actions destined for shorter cartridges.
