I have a Ruger Model 77 Mark II stainless. It is an awesome accurate gun.It has one problem ,the throat is made for factorty loaded Remington And Winchester ammo.I have been trying other bullets but have to seat them way down in the case. The bullet I want to use the most is the 155 gr Lapula bullet. It is very long and carries the bullet diameter way down the bullet almost to the end.I have shot groups as small as 3/8" inch at 200 yards single loading them.Do you have to have a carbide throat reamer for stainless rifles?I want the 155 gr to seat at the end of the mag.It is about 1/2" from there now.If I seat these bullets out further can I use the powder space.I have been using h-870 with up to 70 grains. It showed no pressure. The pressure should be less with a longer throat.I want this gun to shoot these bullets and 140 gr Nosler Partitions as fast and as accurate as possible. Can any body out there measure the length of the throat of their 264 win mag. This Ruger has to have the Shortest one ever.I can only load the Remington 140 gr corelocks to the end of the mag.

throating is not a problem with hi-speed steel throaters.

The 264 was originally designed to use a two diameter bullet and was throated accordingly. I personally think this was a really stupid idea but there you have it. I think the plan was that with the short throat and the 2D 140s it would still work well with light bullets. I have theorized that the engineers who dream up this sort of plan have burned their brains out getting their degree and, consequently, have nothing left with which to work! Lenghtening the throat on your rifle is no problem at all if the gunsmith is at all capable. If the bullet is then seated out to touch the lands powder space will increase but, once the powder charge is adjusted to compensate for the additional space, pressures won't be all that different but performance may be. Regards, Bill.
