cartridge stops in magazine box

When chambering a M98 action for something shorter, like 308 Win, what is the best thing to use for adding cartridge stops on the magazine wall? I suppose one could use just about any small steel half-round, but was wondering if anyone had specific suggestions on material, placement, etc.

How far in front of the shoulder should it go?
Does it extend the whole height of the magazine box wall?
Is it better to notch out the follower or simply narrow it from the cart stop to the front?
How far out from the mag wall does it need to stick out?
Should it be tapered near the top of the stop to allow the round to release from the mag and be picked up by the bolt?
Any other tricks when moving to a shorter cartridge?

I looked in all my references here, and can't find more than 1 small paragraph about this, and haven't found any pictures of such a thing, so whatever info is out there (esp pics) would be very helpful.

I don't want to chamber for 30-06. It will be very nice to not have any mag length restrictions when developing loads for this one and knowing that no bullet tips will get deformed, but I need to stop the shorter rounds from sliding forwards in the magazine under recoil.

You could just try a Gibbs detatchable 3 round magazine, Numrich has them.

Just buy a MKX or Daly 308 follower. Then place a box in the rear of the magazine box. That is how they come from the factory. To function the rounds should be to the front not the rear of the magazine.

Like ramrod said. Spacer in the rear.

They say "Three's charms...", So, do like ramrod340 and Roger suggested. Figure out how much length you will need with the bullets seated out where you desire, and install a sheet metal block from there back.

Just measured an 06 and 306 box and follower. The 308 is 2.585" the 06 is 3.069. Looks to me like the 06 follower and spring could both be shorten in the front. The rest of the spring and floorplate are the same. The spacer in the back of the magazine is .5".
