I just picked up a pre 64 today, took it home and found that the safety is stuck in the fire position. Any idea what may be causing it. This is only my second rifle and I know next to nothing about them. I am hoping that it's something stupid I'm doing that is causing the problem.

Send it to Mark Penrod he is an expert on Model 70's trigger & safetys it will work nice and smooth when you get it back, and have a fine trigger pull.

Open the bolt and close it (should now be cocked ) on an empty chamber. Now try to apply the safety and see if that helps. If it doesn't you've got a problem that needs fixing. Double check that the rifle is actually cocking by looking for the very back center of the bolt to be protruding slightly.
